“Go ahead, send her in,” Eduardo muttered into the office phone. “Got any plans?” he asked his partner, throwing another handful of snackery into his mouth as he leaned back in the chair.
“Seeing the wife,” Reese said, twiddling his thumbs across the small office space, “Might see my daughter on Sunday which would be nice…” His voice tapered off. Eduardo shifted in his seat and shot his partner a glance, expecting him to carry on, but his distant stare brought stillness to the room. The office had been quiet all day. Conversation, and business were painfully slow.
Light from the setting sun trickled through the windows. Golden beams cast gilded shadows throughout the room. The leather chairs, walnut table, sandstone walls and relics of works published long ago shimmered in the dying light. Just as Eduardo checked his watch, a knock came at the door. “Let’s get this over with,” he muttered.
“Come in!”
The door opened, and fresh light from the main building tumbled into the dark corner office. A woman shuffled through the door and held out an all too cheery hand to Reese.
